I may purchase license upgrade for the desktop to windows 10, license upgrade doesnt cost THAT much, and system runs fine otherwise. We do this as well. As long as both the computer at home and their computer at the office have WIndows 10 installed it should not be an issue. When setting up the RDP shortcut for them, click the Display tab, and then put a check in "Use all of my monitors for the remote session", it should work fine.
This is what I had to use in one situation. It's a program that runs on the Windows 7 machine host so the Windows 10 machine remote client so you can use both monitors. Anyone who wanted a second monitor for home was given one - no need buy anything, it's built-into the Microsoft RDP client If using Windows 7, it must have the Ultimate license to allow Multimon.
If you do not have Ultimate, then you would have to use the span option or third party solutions. You can use span by editting the RDC file and setting "span monitors:i:1" Span may not work if the monitors are different resolutions. If OS is higher then Windows 7, then just turning on the Use all my monitors, enables multimon "use multimon:i:1". Considering Windows 7 is EOL anyways, and you don't have any software reliant on 7, upgrading to 10 sounds like a good idea!
It looks like everyone already covered this but most application's allow for multiple monitors. RDP has the checkbox and you can enable it in VMware if you have a server setup with desktops people can connect to. I believe it is a standard option now but only works if you click the option. Anyone disconnecting from the desktop will need to actually log out and log back in. Another thing I've always tried to do is purchase a PC at home that is very similar to the one I have at the office.
But that's a bit of a luxury. Splashtop is our remote tool of choice. Multiple monitors can still be an issue when the remote machine has more monitors than are plugged into the host machine. They act as additional screen emulators vs expensive software to do the same. Teamviewer allows you to have more than one concurrent session to the same computer.
Once you are remoted in open up another connection to your machine, unpin the Teamviewer window and move it to your second monitor and then change the monitor using the monitor icon within your session. Each one of your monitors will now be separated just like it would be if you were at work.
If you are still looking for the free windows 10 download - Microsoft is still providing the installation media for download. I have used this tool just this year to upgrade the last remaining WIndows 7 workstations in my Firm. I can confirm that it's still available, and even better: You don't even need to an IPU. NO, full-stop - do not use this. Not even to mention introducing a backdoor into your environment via God-knows-what malware from the download, It is absolutely against the EULA and if you get a MS audit it could mean your head on a pike.
I know it's tough for some businesses, but it past time to get off Win7. If I were in your shoes I'd use this as leverage to force the hand budget that's holding you back, OP. This feature comes standard in Win10 that was not the case in Win7. Very simple, when setting up or edit the RDP connection, go to the display tab and click to use all my displays.
Not sure what type of business you work for, but for some it was mandatory to be on version of Windows that was still supported by Microsoft. So at this time we had already planned to have everything migrated to Windows 10 buy the cut off date of Microsoft's Support of Windows 7. It will work, but that doesn't mean it's legitimate. There have been numerous discussions of this on Spiceworks, and it's been repeatedly shown that, although it works, it's not a legal license.
The RDP session will span all active monitors on the local machine. I have to say, we moved to Splashtop a while back and my need to babysit people trying to remote in disappeared. Plus, the additional options of viewing multiple displays at the same time, files transfers, remote printing, and blanking or showing the office screen comes in handy.
Like I said, huge time saver! While it doesn't fit our ecosystem we were already anywhere, anytime capable , I turned a few of small companies onto Splashtop. All 3 have been happy with the solution for the past few months. It may not be legit for a volume key. They are more interested in moving people over than charging them for the privilege. Because, Win10 will eventually roll into SaaS model. It has been published by MS numerous times over the years, and is no secret. Let's not hijack this thread, but you don't seem to have understood what I said in my post.
This has, as I said, been discussed on SW extensively. I'm not saying it won't work and activate just like a legitimate license, it absolutely will, but there's a difference between something working, and it being legal.
Will Microsoft go after you for doing this? Probably not, it's likely not worth their time Absolutely, and they would win in court, and you would be subject to pay for more than the cost of the licenses you failed to purchase. To go back to the reason this thread was started, though, I've seen mention of Splashtop here, and I also really like most of their services, but I think the best solution, if your environment already uses RDP, is to upgrade to Windows 10 anyway. Fine, then.

The initial setup required to connect one computer to another is relatively easy, compared with many of the other access software providers we've reviewed.
We like how Splashtop's install client leads you through the process of granting various permissions within your system preferences — a task that could be difficult for anyone who's new to this type of software. The team's open availability and emphasis on resolving issues quickly place Splashtop's customer service above average for remote access software vendors. One major drawback is the annual-only subscription options. That could be a dealbreaker for businesses that have committed to staying lean and flexible with their monthly software fees.
Most of Splashtop's competitors offer a low-cost annual option as well as a higher-priced monthly option. The other issue with this pricing structure is the remaining uncertainty as to how offices will handle hybrid-remote policies moving forward, with some companies struggling to commit to a long-term plan for where their employees will work.
The desktop console for Splashtop Business feels and looks lacking compared to the web-based console. While many remote access customers are more than happy to accomplish their work through a web browser, some users may find the lack of a robust desktop client an issue. We think the overall experience would improve if the desktop and web-based consoles followed a similar design structure. For each individual review, we spent at least two days attempting to find any shortcomings across devices and activities. Unattended access is a category of software that gives business owners, IT staff, and other workers the ability to take control of a second computer or mobile device from anywhere in the world with a strong internet connection. It was developed to allow technicians to troubleshoot computers from a distance, but it has become a very popular tool for hybrid-remote employees who need to access their office computers from home or vice versa. Most unattended access software providers also feature remote support as part of the same subscription plan or as an add-on that functions within the same user interface.
Yes, Splashtop does offer a free limited plan for personal use.
